JSys

JSys is a scholarly-led initiative aiming to address some limitations of today’s publishing outlets in computer science, covering many areas of computer systems research. JSys is founded on its commitment to inclusiveness, transparency, and quality. Those values are embodied by a number of policies, best summarized on the journal homepage.

The most important operating procedures of the journal are described in the Policies and Instructions for Authors page on the JSys website. In particular, JSys offers four deadlines per year, uses open peer review, and commits to return reviews within 6 weeks.

Editors

We are looking for people interested in joining the JSys editors’ team. An editor’s job is two-fold:

They ensure submission forums are ready for each deadline, route submissions to the appropriate area chairs, and follow up with everyone to meet the deadlines; all with the aid of dedicated assistant editors—typically Ph.D. students eager to contribute to their community.
  2. The second role of editors is to drive the journal’s development. This includes optimizing the journal’s day-to-day management, recruiting folks for various roles, advertising the journal, etc.

Area Chairs

The Editorial Board in JSys is split into "areas.” Each area is led by one or a few Area Chair(s). An Area Chair is similar to a Program Manager in funding agencies. They aim to grow the community around a particular topic and accelerate progress. They invite like-minded reviewers, solicit exciting papers, and provide feedback as part of a small community of reviewers.

The main responsibilities of area chairs are to

The area chairs are not responsible for writing reviews; however, they must write a meta-review explaining the decision to the authors.

The terms for area chairs are one year (renewable).

Reviewers

Reviewers are the core of any journal. Their main responsibilities are to
